"Doula" comes from a Greek word for the most important female slave or servant in an ancient Greek household. A Doula in modern terms is a professionally trained companion who “mothers the mother” during labor, birth, and beyond. Trained in comfort measures and childbirth support, using intuition and experience, the doula is a welcome companion while doing the hard work of labor. She is an advocate, team player, and liaison between the family and healthcare team. Although her focus is on the mother, usually both expectant parents benefit from the presence of a doula in a significant way.
